MEDICINE 3.0 “THE COMPRESSION OF MORBIDITY”

Since “Outlive, the science and art of longevity” (a New York Times #1 best seller) was published at the end of March by Dr. Peter Attia (Queens MD, Stanford Surgical training, and a stint working for McKinsey), his following has rocketed because he has a message that is resonating with the healthcare consumer. I’d like to think he’s copied a page out of my song book!

It’s really refreshing to have a ‘colleague’ who is not only well educated but also not hyperbolic with his messaging.

The reason I bring him up today is to reinforce with my clients and followers that as “The Tiger Doctor” (IG name!), I’m not the only one who is saying that as physicians we should not be simply quoting scientific studies but rather be more of a translator, helping you understand and apply relevant medical insights.

We need to reduce the emphasis on longevity and trying “stave off death”. Dr. Attia focuses on maintaining health span with the major emphasis on prevention, recognizing each person as a unique individual (aka personalized medicine).

Attia has “Four Horsemen” – heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s (and related neurodegenerative diseases) and metabolic dysfunction (insulin resistance, Type 2 diabetes). Like my many messages to my audience, he too is trying to weave all the common threads together for these four conditions. Metabolic dysfunction is a key underpinning of causality. He too preaches to his audience the importance of regular exercise, good quality nutrition, sufficient sleep, and destressing!

The new phase of the day: “compression of morbidity” might be attainable by preventing these conditions, reducing the time in decline, and delaying your demise. In other words, all the things we do for our telomere health is also good to compress our morbidity.

SUMMER SHINE HEALTHY

As we continue to enjoy the glorious July sunshine, we are reminded that it is UV Safety Awareness Month! Remember that the season’s warmth and bright sunshine necessitates an upgrade in your skincare routine, especially when it comes to defending against the harmful effects of the sun’s UV rays.

Why not indulge in HydraFacial treatments this summer to pamper your skin?

HydraFacial is more than simply a facial. It’s a ground-breaking multi-step treatment that cleanses, exfoliates, and fills your skin with skin-loving nutrients at the cellular level.

The usage of powerful antioxidant components such as green tea extract, algae extract, licorice root extract, and fruit extracts is HydraFacial’s superpower.

HydraFacial’s powerful antioxidants:

Green Tea Extract: Rich in polyphenols (another term for antioxidants), green tea extract soothes the skin, reduces indications of ageing, and protects against free radicals.

Algae Extract: It’s no longer only for sushi! While restoring important vitamins and minerals, algae extract moisturises, softens, and detoxifies the skin.

Licorice Root Extract: This extract is a natural skin lightening component that helps to reduce the look of dark circles, discolouration, and age spots.

Fruit Extracts: Nature’s sweets contain natural AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids), which exfoliate the skin and create smoother, younger-looking skin.

The best aspect of a HydraFacial treatment is that it is customised to your skin’s demands, ensuring that you receive exactly what your skin requires.

GUT HEALTH AND HEALTHY SKIN

Achieving healthy skin through gut health and proper nutrition is a holistic approach that can significantly improve your skin’s appearance and overall well-being. The gut-skin connection emphasizes the importance of maintaining a balanced and diverse gut microbiome.

Get gut healthy:

1. Consume nutrient-dense foods: Incorporating a diet rich in whole, unprocessed foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins to your diet provides essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that promote skin health. Super foods like goji berry, spirulina, and buckthorn berry when added to a smoothie can support a thriving gut microbiome, to help reduce inflammation and skin conditions.

2. Drink water: Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water assists in flushing out toxins and keeping the skin healthy and supple. Our skin is the largest organ in our body, protecting us from outside aggressions. Keeping it healthy is key, and drinking more water is the most natural way to keep our skin replenished and glowing.

3. Avoid sugars and processed foods: Refined sugars and carbohydrates found in processed foods make your skin wrinkle faster due to glycation, a process that occurs when sugar undermines the collagen and elastin production in your skin. Avoiding sugars and processed foods helps prevent inflammation, acne, rosacea, premature aging, and maintain a healthier skin barrier.

A well-balanced diet, combined with good gut health, not only nourishes the skin from within but also enhances its natural radiance and resilience, leaving you with a vibrant and healthy-looking complexion.

Our health team can help you achieve your health and wellness goals.
